1. Background 

Pamoja Trust is a non-profit making organization founded in 1999. PT is dedicated to promoting access to land, shelter and basic services for the Urban Poor. The organization takes principled and pragmatic approaches to protection and promotion of the right to the city through advocacy and precedence setting models for problem solving. PT provides social, technical and legal expertise at local community, national and international levels to ensure that urban growth and urbanism adhere to social justice principles and that national and international human rights standards are implemented in favour of the most vulnerable of urban citizens.

Pamoja Trust seeks to employ a Program Officer – Research under the Terms of Reference described below:

2. Technical Terms of Reference

As the Program Officer – Research, you shall be responsible for leading all research activities in Pamoja Trust. In consultation with the Federation Building Team, you shall further be expected to identify advocacy agenda that require research and support with data. You shall continuously collaborate with colleagues in the implementation of the wider Pamoja Trust strategy. More specifically, your duties have shall encompass the following Key Result Areas.

  1. Define and implement the advocacy and research strategy
  2. Develop research and mapping tools and ensure that users have the capacity to use them
  3. Oversee the effective execution of research and spatial mapping assignments
  4. Prepare research reports and provide relevant information to the various stakeholders internally and externally
  5. Support advocacy activities through provision of reliable research data and building the communities’ capacity for advocacy

3. Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate degree in the built environment (Urban Planning, Geospatial Engineering, Architecture) or related field. Masters Degree is desirable.
  2. Over three years experience in research, advocacy and urban planning with a bias for informal settlements.
  3. Familiarity with spatial and data analysis tools such as QGIS and SPSS
  4. Demonstrable presentation and report writing skills
