The Legal Status of East JerusalemAlthough Israel has formally annexed East Jerusalem to the State of Israel, under international law East Jerusalem remains part of the occupied West Bank.  The application of Israeli domestic law in East Jerusalem is unlawful, yet has many implications for Palestinian residents of the city.  This report considers the legality of Israel’s claim to sovereignty over East Jerusalem since 1967 and the history of legal and political developments, including UN resolutions.   It sets out in detail the status of East Jerusalem under international humanitarian law,  covering property rights under occupation and the prohibition on settlements in occupied territory.  The second  part of the report deals with the civil status of Palestinian residents in East Jerusalem and the legality and implications of Israeli laws which strip some Palestinians of their East Jerusalem residence.
