UN-Habitat’s Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) and the Global Land Tool Network have entered into an agreement that will further strengthen and streamline the way UN-Habitat and GLTN address land issues in the Arab region. Formalized on 16th June 2016 in Nairobi, by UN-Habitat Acting Director of the Cairo-based ROAS office, Dyfed Aubrey and GLTN Leader, Oumar Sylla, the agreement builds on an ongoing, well established collaboration between the two offices. The agreement commits USD 275,000 towards six areas of focus over the next eighteen months.

With land underpinning all the key aspects of urban development such as housing, economic development, education and transport, responsible land governance is central to prevention, mitigation and resolution of violent conflicts and social unrest. It’s on the basis of the above considerations that these funds were committed by the two UN-Habitat offices.

Priority areas of focus during this period will be improving access to land and tenure security in the Arab States with particular emphasis on conflict, displacement, migration, returns and cross cutting issues such as gender responsive interventions in these countries.

Specifically, the catalytic activities that will be implemented under this partnership are capacity development of partners and UN-Habitat personnel in the region in addressing land issues; development and expansion of the streams of work related to land and conflict, housing, and land and property rights in the region; development, adaptation and piloting of conflict-sensitive land tools in select countries such as Iraq; strengthening women’s access to land (with the finalization of a set of context specific guidelines and the establishment of broad and cross-sectoral partnerships); joint resource mobilization; and undertaking priority research on land .
