On 21 and 22 February 2014, over 53 participants attended the international workshop on land indicators in Rome, Italy. In her opening speech Ambassador Gerda Verburg of The Netherlands and Chair of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), emphasized the importance of an inclusive process which will value consultation, with the ultimate aim of achieving tangible results on the ground that improve the lives of people.

The workshop brought together a range of stakeholders representing governments, bilateral and multilateral organizations, farmer organizations, non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, academia and professional bodies.

One of the key points highlighted during the workshop was creating linkages and complementarity of processes of particularly the Post-2015 Development Agenda, the Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance on Tenure of Land, Forests and Fisheries (VGs) and the African Union-led Land Policy Framework and Guidelines. Participants also reviewed various ways to engage in the Post-2015 Development Agenda through the land indicators.

Indicator Initiative (GLII) in creating a platform for multi-stakeholder participation and consultation was also highlighted. More importantly, the proposed short list of four land indicators was reviewed along with a longer list that could form the basis for discussion and engagement on land issues.

Participants highlighted the importance of creating the complementary linkages of processes particularly on the VGs.

The workshop was co-convened by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), OXFAM and the International Land Coalition (ILC) Secretariat. The Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) and UN-Habitat provided financial and technical support to the workshop.

The workshop was organized towards the closure of the IFAD Farmers Forum and Governing Council. The workshop was part of the series of consultations facilitated by the Global Land Indicator Initiative (GLII) which was established in 2012 by the World Bank, UN-Habitat and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, with the aim to support efforts to harmonize monitoring efforts around land tenure and governance.
